въпреки
Bulgarian
Alternative forms
- въ́прѣки (vǎ́prěki) (Pre-reform orthography (1945))
Etymology
From Old Church Slavonic въпрѣкꙑ (vŭprěky), from въ (vŭ, “in”) + прѣкꙑ (prěky, “across”), from Proto-Slavic *реr-kъ, whose first element comes from Proto-Indo-European *preh₂- and is thus cognate with English for. Cognates include Russian вопреки́ (voprekí) (borrowed from the same Old Church Slavonic word), Bulgarian пря́ко (prjáko, “straight”), and Russian поперёк (poperjók, “across”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ˈvɤprɛkʲi]
