From глух (gluh, “deaf”) + -е́ц (-éc). Formally identical with Polish głuszec (“wood grouse”), Ukrainian глуше́ць (hlušécʹ, “wood grouse”), Belarusian глушэ́ц (hlušéc, “wood grouse”) (cf. Bulgarian глуха́р (gluhár), Russian глуха́рь (gluxárʹ) with the same meaning).
