Etymology

Probably expressive or onomatopoeic in origin, similar to Bulgarian тепам (tepam, to bash), гепя (gepja, to steal). Possibly related to dialectal Serbo-Croatian дѐпати (to beat), dialectal Russian дёп (djop, inferior, last one)[1], Polish deptać (to trample), and further akin to Latvian dępât (to strike down).

  3. (reflexive with се) to get away
