драпать

Russian

Etymology

Presumably, with the original sense being “to tear, to scratch”, ultimately descends from Proto-Slavic *drapati; compare to Czech drápat and Polish drapać; compare to дать дёру (datʹ djóru), удира́ть (udirátʹ), рвану́ть (rvanútʹ), рвать ко́гти (rvatʹ kógti) for other examples of mutation of “to tear” into “to flee”.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈdrapətʲ]

Verb

дра́пать (drápatʹ) impf (perfective драпану́ть)

  1. (colloquial) to skedaddle, to hightail, to flee
