дрыва

Old Ruthenian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *drъva.

Noun

дрыва (transliteration needed) n inan pl

  1. Alternative form of дрова (wood)

Descendants

Unlike крывавый, which won over кровавый, this reflex of *-rъ- was replaced by дрова and is mostly lost in daughter languages. However, it does survive in certain derivatives:

  • Belarusian: дрывако́л (dryvakól, woodchopper)
  • Belarusian: дрывасе́к (dryvasjék, woodcutter)
  • Belarusian: дрыво́тня (dryvótnja, woodhouse)
  • Belarusian: дрывя́ны (dryvjány, wooden)
  • Ukrainian: дриві́тня (dryvítnja, woodhouse) (dialectal)
