Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (üžik, “syllable; letter”), Karakhanid [script needed] (üžük, “syllable”), Tatar иҗек (icek, “syllable”), Tuvan үжүк (üjük, “letter; alphabet”).
Akhmetyanov suggests derivation from Middle Chinese 字 (ji, “letter, symbol, character”).
