From an earlier ишти́х (ištíh), ишта́х (ištáh), borrowed from Ottoman Turkish اشتاه (iştah), from Persian اشتها (eštehâ), ultimately from Arabic اِشْتِهاء (ištihāʔ, craving). Probably remodelled under the influence of the native outdated Bulgarian ища́й (ištáj, claim).
