Uncertain. Possibly related to Proto-Mongolic *kelen (“tongue, language”), or alternatively inherited from Proto-Turkic *kẹle- (“to woo, court, ask, beg, message”) (compare Bashkir кәләш (käläş, “bride”) and калаҫнӑ хӗр (kalaśnă h̬ĕr, “betrothed girl, fiancée”)).
