Uncertain. Possibly related to Proto-Mongolic *kelen (tongue, language), or alternatively inherited from Proto-Turkic *kẹle- (to woo, court, ask, beg, message) (compare Bashkir кәләш (käläş, bride) and калаҫнӑ хӗр (kalaśnă h̬ĕr, betrothed girl, fiancée)).
