According to BER, a clipping of наво́ище (navóište, something wrapped around) + обу́ща pl (obúšta, footwear). Alternatively, possibly a plurale tantum of hypothetical Proto-Slavic *navuťe n (footwear) (attested as dialectal наву́ще sg (navúšte) in Rupian dialects).
