According to BER, a clipping of наво́ище (navóište, “something wrapped around”) + обу́ща pl (obúšta, “footwear”). Alternatively, possibly a plurale tantum of hypothetical Proto-Slavic *navuťe n (“footwear”) (attested as dialectal наву́ще sg (navúšte) in Rupian dialects).
