From Proto-Samic *ńālmē, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ńälmä. Cognates include Mansi не̄лум (nēlum, “tongue”), Hungarian nyelv, Eastern Mari йылме (jëlme) and Northern Sami njálbmi.
