открыть

Russian

Etymology

Inherited from Old East Slavic отъкрꙑти (otŭkryti, to uncover, unfold; to reveal, disclose), from Proto-Slavic *otъkryti, from *otъ- + *kryti (to cover, hide). Synchronically analyzable as от- (ot-) + крыть (krytʹ).

The sense "to discover" is a calque of French découvrir or German entdecken.
