From Proto-Slavic *rěpьjь. Equivalent to реп (rep, “bur”) (dialectal) + -ей (-ej). Dialectally also known as Bulgarian ре́пел (répel), рьо́пель (rjópelʹ), ре́пен (répen) (possibly from Proto-Slavic *rěpьlь, *rěpělь).
