родить

Russian

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *rodìti.

  • IPA(key): [rɐˈdʲitʲ]
  • (file)

роди́ть (rodítʹ) impf or pf (imperfective рожда́ть or рожа́ть, verbal noun рожде́ние)

  2. to give rise to
  3. to bear, to yield (of land)

Usage notes

  • The usage of this verb in the imperfective is dated. Modern Russian allows only the use as a perfective.
  • All forms are identical between the perfective and imperfective conjugation, with the exception of родила́ (pf) / роди́ла (impf) and inevitable differences due to the aspect: the perfective has no present participles and uses the present forms of the imperfective for the future.
