From *čaqïrïm (the distance at which a shout as a voice signal can be heard), from Proto-Turkic *čaqïr- (to call, hail).

Cognate with Kazakh шақырым (şaqırım), Kyrgyz чакырым (çakırım), Southern Altai чакырым (čakïrïm), Uzbek chaqirim, Uyghur چاقىرىم (chaqirim, verst).
