смърч
Bulgarian
Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *smьrčь (“spruce”), of uncertain origin. Folk etymology relates it to Bulgarian смърчам (smǎrčam, “to snore”), Bulgarian смърдя (smǎrdja, “to stink”) because of the characteristic aroma of its pitch, which spruce is known for.
