стопанин

Bulgarian

Etymology

From an earlier стопа́н (stopán) (dialectal) + -ин (-in) (agentive suffix). Formally reflects Proto-Slavic *stopan(in)ъ which yielded Old Church Slavonic стопанъ (stopanŭ), Serbo-Croatian стопан, Macedonian стопан (stopan) and was loaned into Romanian stăpân, but beyond that - of uncertain origin.

Proposed etymologies include:

Noun

стопа́нин (stopánin) m (feminine стопа́нка)

  1. master, property owner, host
    Synonym: домакин (domakin)
  2. (dialectal) home spirit, protector of property (mythological)
