страна 404

Russian

Etymology

From Russian страна́ (straná, country) and 404 (an error) (страна́ четы́реста четы́ре), suggesting claims about Ukraine as an illegitimate state.

Later used back by Ukrainian netizens to mock Russia's war crimes and international sanctions against Russia.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [strɐˈna t͡ɕɪˈtɨrʲɪstə t͡ɕɪˈtɨrʲe]
  • (file)

Noun

страна́ 404 (straná 404) f inan (genitive страны́ 404, nominative plural страны́ 404, genitive plural стран 404)

  1. (politics, Internet slang, derogatory, offensive) Ukraine.
  2. (Ukraine, politics, Internet slang, derogatory, offensive) Russia.

Usage notes

Mainly used by Russian nationalists.

Aside from expansionist and militarist claims about the whole of Ukraine as former Russian territory, this term refers to the ousting of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych during the Euromaidan protests of 2014, making the presidents after him and the entire country appear illegitimate.

Recently, during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, some Ukrainian online users also used it back towards Russia to mock its war crimes, sanctions by other countries, and poorer international reputation.
