Танау

Etymology

Cognate with Siberian Tatar танау (nose, nasal cavity), Kazakh танау (tanau, nostril, nose), Kumyk танав (tanaw, nostril), Khakas танаа (tanaa, nasal cavity, nostril), Yakut таныы (tanıı, nostril).

Found also in Kalmyk хамрин тана (hamrin tana, nose wings), Buryat хамарай танаа (xamaraj tanaa, septum).

Due to narrow geographic distribution and lack of attestation in medieval sources, the ultimate provenance of the word cannot be ascertained.
