токачка

Bulgarian

Обикновена токачка

Etymology

From an outdated тока́ч (tokáč, propeller, runner) + -ка (-ka), from Proto-Slavic *tokati (to propel, to plunge (fluid)). The name may refer to the repand dot-pattern of their plumage or to their preferred locomotion being running rather than flying. Compare *kurъ (cock).

The bird was introduced in Bulgaria during Ottoman times (along with turkeys) and formerly had been called миси́рка (misírka) (literally: Egyptian bird).
