From Proto-Turkic *tïd- (to hinder, obstruct)[1].

Cognate with Kazakh тыю (tıyw, to forbid, hold back), Kyrgyz тый- (tıy-), Karachay-Balkar тыяргъа (tıyarğa, hold back, restrain), Uzbek tiymoq (to control, hold back).
