Inherited from Old East Slavic ѧбетникъ (ębetnikŭ), ябедникъ (jabednik), borrowed from Old Norse embætti, from Proto-Germanic *ambahtiją, derived from *ambahtaz (servant), from Gaulish ambaxtos (servant), from Proto-Celtic *ambaxtos (servant).
