Inherited from Proto-Slavic *jebàti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jebtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃yébʰeti, from *h₃yebʰ-. Cognate with Russian еба́ть (jebátʹ), Ukrainian їба́ти (jibáty), Ancient Greek οἴφω (oíphō), Sanskrit यभति (yabhati).
