Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *ȫgren- (to learn), reflexive form of unattested Proto-Turkic *ȫgre- (to learn), derived from Proto-Turkic *ȫg (mind, thought, intelligence), which is a derivative of Proto-Turkic *ȫ- (to think of, understand, realize)[1].

Cognate with Kazakh үйрену (üirenu), Kyrgyz үйрөнүү (üyrönüü), Uzbek oʻrganmoq, Uyghur ئۆگەنمەك (ögenmek), Turkmen öwrenmek, Turkish öğrenmek, Azerbaijani öyrənmək, Khakas ӱгренерге (ügrenerge), Tuvan өөренир (öörenir), Yakut үөрэн (üören), Chuvash вĕрен (vĕren, to study, to learn).
