Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁-, zero-grade of *delh₁- (“to cleave, cut, work on timber”), grown with a prothetic ա- (a-) and enlarged by -ձ (-j); the closest cognates are Ancient Greek δάλτος (dáltos, “writing tablet”) and Czech dláha (“splint”).[1][2]
