Etymology

An Iranian borrowing; compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (glywpʾn' /grīwbān/, neck-guard, gorge), Classical Persian گریبان (girībān, collar, the opening or breast of a garment; pocket). For the constituents see Proto-Indo-Iranian *griHwáH (neck) and Old Armenian -պան (-pan, keeper, protector).
