Etymology

The origin is disputed. Perhaps a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate word related to Latin faber. Derivation from Proto-Indo-European *dʰh₂ebʰ- (to put together, fit) is also possible; in that case cognate with Latin faber and Proto-Slavic *dobrъ. Has been also linked with Sumerian 𒁾𒉄 (/tabira, tibira/, joiner, craftsman, sculptor), likely itself a loan from Hurrian 𒋰𒄿𒊑 (tab-i-ri /tabiri/, metal founder, caster, (copper)smith).

Noun

դարբին (darbin)

  1. blacksmith

Usage notes

In some attested passages Martirosyan sees the additional sense “heathen priest; poet”, which possibly originates from the Indo-European tradition.
