Etymology

A Hurro-Urartian borrowing:[1][2][3] compare Urartian 𒄩𒇻𒇷 (ḫa-lu-li /ḫaluli/, grape, fruit, banquet, fruit offering),[4][5][6] Hurrian 𒄑𒄩𒇻𒇷 (GIŠḫaluli, a certain fruit, fruit-bearing plant)[7]. In their turn, these may be borrowed from Semitic.[8] Coptic ⲁⲗⲟⲗⲓ (aloli, grape) (from Egyptian jꜣrrt) and Ancient Greek χάλις (khális, unmixed wine) have also been compared.[9][10] Note especially the Late Egyptian pronunciation /ʔaˈla(ʔ)lə/ of jꜣrrt.
