Etymology
Ulmus laevis
From ծփալ (cpʿal, “to flutter”) + -ի (-i, botanical suffix). Calque of German Flatterulme, from flattern (“to flutter”). Probably coined by the Mekhitarists of Vienna, first appearing in Mēnēvišean's botany and hence copied into dictionaries.

Initially referring only to the European white elm[2] (see the quote from Mēnēvišean), later is used imprecisely for the whole genus[3][4].
