Etymology

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Old Persian *naftaʰ (/naft/), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (npt' /naft/, naphtha), Persian نفت (naft) and Central Kurdish نەوت (newt). Armenian նավթ (navtʿ) is a modern borrowing; the regular development from Old Armenian նաւթ (nawtʿ) would have been նոթ (notʿ), indeed found in some dialects.
