Etymology
The origin in uncertain.[1] Perhaps from a root *որ- (*or-), from Proto-Indo-European *por-, from *per- (“to hit”), and cognate with Proto-Slavic *perunъ (“thunder”), *pьrati (“to beat”), Sanskrit पर्जन्य (parjánya, “rain-cloud”), Old Armenian հարկանեմ (harkanem, “to hit”).[2][3][4] Alternatively, perhaps related to ոռնամ (oṙnam).[5]
