An Iranian borrowing; compare Sanskrit प्रतिवार (prativāra, “warding off, resisting”), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬭𐬀‎ (paⁱriuuāra, “surrounding protection”). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *pati-vāra-. Classical Syriac ܦܕܛܘܪܐ‎ (/pdṭwrʾ/, “fortification”) is borrowed from the same source.

     Եւ հասին եւ պատեցին ի վերայ նորա զԱբէլ եւ զԲեթմաքա․ եւ կուտեցին բլուր հողոյ հանդէպ քաղաքին, եւ կանգնեցաւ իբրեւ զպատուար․ եւ ամենայն զօրն որ ընդ Յովաբայ՝ եղծանէր կործանէր զպարիսպն։
