From Proto-Indo-European *stuh₂rós, from *steh₂-.

Alternatively, from Proto-Armenian *stiwar, from Proto-Indo-European *stipr̥o-, and cognate with Lithuanian stiprùs (strong), Ancient Greek στιφρός (stiphrós, firm).
