Etymology

Likely from Proto-Indo-European *tweh₂-wo- (“whole”) and cognate with Ancient Greek σῶς (sôs), σάος (sáos), σόος (sóos, “safe, sound, unharmed”).[1] For the sound change compare քեզ (kʿez), քո (kʿo), քառ (kʿaṙ).

Alternatively, connected with Latin caveo (“to take precautions, beware, take care”).[2]
