From the root א־ב־ה (ʾ-b-h). Cognate with Ugaritic 𐎀𐎁𐎊𐎐 (ảbyn, poor, impoverished). Borrowed into Late Egyptian, producing Coptic ⲉⲃⲓⲏⲛ (ebiēn, miserable, wretched).
