From the root א־ב־ה (ʾ-b-h). Cognate with Ugaritic 𐎀𐎁𐎊𐎐 (ảbyn, “poor, impoverished”). Borrowed into Late Egyptian, producing Coptic ⲉⲃⲓⲏⲛ (ebiēn, “miserable, wretched”).
