Etymology

From earlier *yoʔr-, borrowed from Egyptian

(jtrw, “river, the Nile”). The word was borrowed into Hebrew after the shift of /t/ to /ʔ/, which is attested from the 18th Dynasty onward in the form of the alternate spelling jrw. Cognate with Demotic ⁠⁠⁠⁠ (yr, “river, canal”) and Coptic ⲉⲓⲟⲟⲣ (eioor, “canal”).
