Etymology

Root
ס־ר־ט (s-r-ṭ)

The root ס־ר־ט occurs but postbiblically and its words are utterly Aramaic borrowings or derivations from it.

A native cognate to Arabic شَرَطَ (šaraṭa) would be **שָׂרַט (śāraṭ) but is only included in Bibles by textual corruption and is missing in Biblical Hebrew dictionaries and critical editions of the Tanakh postdating the long nineteenth century.

Noun

סֶרֶט (séret) m (plural indefinite סְרָטִים, singular construct סֶרֶט־, plural construct סִרְטֵי־) [pattern: קֶטֶל]

  1. A ribbon.
  2. (by extension) A film.
