שמואל

Hebrew

Etymology

Compound of an unknown first element with אֵל (ʾēl, god). The part is often said to be שָׁמַע (šāmáʿ, to hear, to listen) since elistic names tend to derive from exhortations from verbs, however this is of little verisimilitude since the third radical ע (ʿ) of the verb is wanting. Another theory posits (proposes for consideration) the presence of שֵׁם (šēm, name), starting from a pre-biblical Hebrew *šimuhu-ʾílu “his name is El”, which also lacks plausibility since man would not be put on a par with El. Other theories posit derivation from roots meaning ‘God’ as in Heaven or the upper sky (see שָׁמַיִם) and ‘high’ (see עלי (literally elevation)) giving “God is high”.
