From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾkʾs /āgāh/, “aware, knowing”), ultimately a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *kʷeḱ- (“to see; to look”). Related to نگاه (negâh) and dialectal گاس (gâs). Related to Old Armenian ակահ (akah), an Iranian borrowing.
