Etymology

Inherited from Middle Persian ’lz’ (Arzah), from Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬉𐬰𐬀𐬵𐬍‎ (Arəzahī, “east”).

The term initially was identified with the Indus region, with the expansion of knowledge during the Middle Iranian era, it came to be applied to most of South Asia.
