Etymology

From اَلْ‎ (al-) + أَبْنَاء‎ (ʾabnāʾ), plural of اِبْن‎ (ibn, “son”).

The second sense may be a short form of the phrase أَبْنَاء الْدَوْلَة‎ (ʾabnāʾ al-dawla, literally “sons of the state, i.e. the Abbasid Caliphate”).
