From اَلْ (al-) + أَبْنَاء (ʾabnāʾ), plural of اِبْن (ibn, “son”).
The second sense may be a short form of the phrase أَبْنَاء الْدَوْلَة (ʾabnāʾ al-dawla, literally “sons of the state, i.e. the Abbasid Caliphate”).
