This word ultimately evolved from ایپ (ip, string, cord, rope, line); cognate with Crimean Tatar yipek, Kumyk йибек (yibek), Azerbaijani ipək, Turkmen ýüpek, Salar yipek, Uzbek ipak, Kazakh жібек (jıbek), Kyrgyz жибек (jibek), Khakas чібек (çìbek) and Uyghur يىپەك (yipek).
