Borrowed from Classical Persian بنده (banda) (also influenced by Punjabi بَنْدَہ (banda) / ਬੰਦਾ (bandā, person; man)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (to bind). By surface analysis, بند (band, close; block; confined) + ہ (ah). Doublet of باندھنا (bāndhnā, to tie).
