Inherited from Prakrit 𑀣𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (thukkaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀣𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀢𑀺 (*thukkati). Cognate with Gujarati થૂંકવું (thū̃kvũ), Marathi थुंकणे (thuṅkṇe), Sindhi ٿُڪَڻُ / थुकणु (thukaṇu), Punjabi ਥੁੱਕਣਾ (thukkaṇā), Nepali थुक्नु (thuknu), Oriya ଥୁକିବା (thukiba). By surface analysis, تُھوک (thūk, spit; saliva) + ـنا (-nā, verb-forming suffix).
