From the root د ن و‎ (d-n-w) or د ن ي‎ (d-n-y). Feminine elative of أَدْنَى‎ (ʔadnā, “lower”). دُنيَا‎ (“world”) is originally the "lower place" (as opposed to heaven, the "higher place"); compare English here below.
