Inherited from Old Punjabi ਧੀਅ (dhīa), from Paisaci Prakrit [Term?] (compare Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀥𑀻𑀤𑀸 (dhīdā)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dʰuǰʰitr-, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰugh₂tḗr. Cognate with poetic Hindi धिया (dhiyā) and Southern Hindko تہی (thī).
