Etymology
From سپر (separ, “shield”) + ـدیس (dis, “-shaped”), literally "shield-shaped". Coined by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in 2005 through a Persian calque of Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, “shield-shaped”), from θῠρεός (thureós, “oblong shield”) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-form, -like”).
