Etymology

From سپر (separ, shield) + ـدیس (dis, -shaped), literally "shield-shaped". Coined by the Academy of Persian Language and Literature in 2005 through a Persian calque of Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, shield-shaped), from θῠρεός (thureós, oblong shield) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, -form, -like).
