Arabic

Etymology

Likely borrowed into Standard Arabic from South Levantine Arabic and North Levantine Arabic مِجْوِز، مِجْوَز (mijwiz, mijwaz), whose other meanings include even (divisible by two) and paired. Both pronunciations must descend from an Arabic مُجْوَز (mujwaz, paired, coupled, doubled) that would have a Modern Standard Arabic cognate in مُزْوَج (muzwaj), passive participle of a verb أَزْوَجَ (ʔazwaja, to pair, to couple, to double). Terms of the root ز و ج (z-w-j) commonly metathesized to ج و ز (j-w-z) in Levantine and other vernaculars.
