نوشتن

See also: نوسبن

Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian npštn' (nibištan, write), seems to be a compound. If so, the elements are most likely from either Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní (downwards, into, carefully, engrave, inscribe) or Proto-Indo-European *h₂en- (up, on, onto) and Middle Persian *pištan-, from Old Persian *pi⁽ⁿ⁾θ-, from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-, meaning paint down and write upon, whence English paint and picture. Cognates with Russian написать (napisatʹ).
