Etymology

From ولایتی‎ (vilāyatī, “foreign”) and بینگن‎ (baiṅgan, “eggplant, aubergine”). Cognate with Bengali বিলাতী বেগুন (bilatī begun). Compare with Persian گوجه فرنگی‎ (goje farangi, “European plum”) and Dari بادنجان رومی‎ (bâdemjân-e rumi, “Roman aubergine”).
