Probably from و‎ (w, “and”) +‎ أَيْن‎ (ʔayn, “where”) (obsolete), together going back to Arabic وَأَيْنَ‎ (waʔayna, “and where”). Compare Egyptian Arabic فين‎ (fēn), from either فَأَيْنَ‎ (faʔayna, “so where”) or فِي أَيْنَ‎ (fī ʔayna, “in where”). Compare also Acadian and Cajun French éyoù, yoù (“where”), from et (“and”) +‎ où (“where”).
